Bahia
The state of Bahia, with an area of about 567,000 km² (the size of France), is one of the largest of Brazil's 26 states and is located in the north eastern part of the country on the Atlantic coast. It is the fourth most populous state with a population of 13.4 million concentrated mostly along the coast. On 22nd April 1500, the Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral landed at Porto Seguro (Safe Port) on the southern coast of Bahia and claimed the territory in the name of Portugal. The area from Porto Seguro to Ilhéus is now one of the busiest tourist destinations in Brazil due to its colonial history and many attractive, magical beaches. More recently, Costa do Sauípe, which embraces one of the most beautiful landscapes found along the northern coast of Bahia, has seen the development of the largest conglomerate of hotels and resorts in Brazil.
Salvador
Salvador, which was established in 1549, is the capital of Bahia and was the capital of Brazil from 1549 to 1763. It is a city of history and scenery intertwined with a rich and diversified culture. The heart of the city, Pelourinho, has been declared an international historical monument and is included on Unesco's World Heritage List. Surrounded by the warm clear waters of the South Atlantic, Salvador enjoys average temperatures ranging from 23°C to 33°C, and basks in the breeze of steady trade winds.
Ilha de Cajaíba
At the mouth of River Seriji lies the beautiful island of Cajaíba to one side whilst the ancient village of São Francisco do Conde lies to the other. From 1712 until 1716 the Governor General of the region Alexandre Gomes Argola Ferrão, Baron of Cajaíba, built a magnificent mansion on the island. Both the island and the mansion still carry his name. Originally a sugar plantation, then a military base and latterly in the last century a sugar cane and fruit plantation, the island was acquired in 2006 to develop a five star resort with 3,000 homes and more than 2,000 hotel rooms. This luxurious resort will have all the amenities that modern resorts demand.
